The bad luck with Mother Nature continued for Jersey Sky Blue as the W-League team battled to a 0-0 draw with the New York Magic in a game that was called off in the 72nd minute due to lightning and was not resumed. Sky Blue held a 15-5 advantage in shots at Ranger Stadium on the campus of Drew University.
In last Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Boston Renegades, the game was also delayed for 40 minutes due to lightning. With the tie, Sky Blue holds a 2-1-1 record while the Magic are now 0-2-3. Jillian Loyden needed just one save to record the shutout for Sky Blue while Alicia Defino recorded six saves in goal for New York.
Sky Blue threatened early and often in the first half but couldn't find the finishing touch. Michele O'Brien had the best chances getting in behind the Magic defense twice but failing to convert. In the eighth minute, Delfino came off her line and slid through O'Brien before she could get a shot off and she repeated the feat stuffing O'Brien's effort six minutes later.
Sky Blue avoided disaster just before halftime. Sky Blue defender Sarra Moller collided with Magic forward Donna-Kay Henry inside the box in the 44th minute but no penalty was called.
Loyden's biggest intervention came in the 61st minute when she dove to deflect a cross from Gemma Davison and then dove again at the feet of a Magic forward before any more danger came about.
Sky Blue will play the United States Under-17 National Team on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Pascack Valley High School. The next W-League home game is on Wednesday night when Sky Blue hosts intrastate rivals the New Jersey Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. at Drew University.
