U.S. Under-17 National Team Shuts Down Sky Blue
Courtney Verloo connected in the first half and Kristen Mewis added another goal in the closing moments as the United States Under-17 National Team knocked off Jersey Sky Blue 2-0 in an exhibition match at Pascack Valley High School. US keepers Taylor Vancil and Alexa Gaul split the shutout in goal.
The US U-17s held a 19-5 advantage in shots as Sky Blue failed to find the back of the net for the fourth straight game including two W-League regular season matches and two exhibition matches. Sky Blue returns to action on Wednesday night in the "Battle of New Jersey" as the New Jersey Wildcats visit Drew University for a 7:30 p.m. matchup in W-League action.
In addition to the two goals, the US U-17 squad hit the post four times with the first coming in the eighth minute when Samantha Mewis pinged the outside of the right post from 25 yards out. Gina DeMaio responded for Sky Blue with a long-distance effort that forced a save from Vancil five minutes later.
In the 14th minute, the US broke the ice as Erika Tymark sent Verloo in behind on the left and she tucked a shot past Sky Blue keeper Jillian Loyden and into the far side netting.
DeMaio had another shot from 25-yards out tipped over by Vancil in the 38th minute as Sky Blue went into halftime with a 1-0 deficit.
Between the 57th and 77th minute, the US team hit the left post three times with Olivia Klei, Victoria DeMartino, and Tymark taking the shots. Kristen Mewis accounted for the final margin when she took a long clearance inside her own end and countered all the way into the box before slotting a shot under Sky Blue reserve keeper Dimitra Poulos for the second goal in the 90th minute.
