Sky Blue and Ottawa Fury Play to a Scoreless Deadlock
Neither Jersey Sky Blue nor the Ottawa Fury could find the back of the net as the teams played to a 0-0 tie in a W-League exhibition match at Meadowland Park. The game was played in conjunction with the 27th Annual Cougar Soccer Club Memorial Day Invitational.
Jillian Loyden and Dimitra Poulos split the shutout in goal for Sky Blue with each needing just one save to secure the shutout. Ottawa held a 7-3 advantage in shots overall in a battle of W-League contenders that featured few scoring chances. Sky Blue does not face the Fury in the regular season and if the teams meet again it would have to be in the W-League final four.
Sky Blue returns to regular season action this Saturday when the second-year W-League squad celebrates its home opener. Sky Blue, which won its first two games of the regular season, will host the Boston Renegades at 7:30 p.m. at Drew University in Madison, NJ. Against Ottawa, Sky Blue had one good chance in each half to break the tie. Just over four minutes into the game, Bonnie Young headed a Christy Zwolski cross just wide of the near post. In the 74th minute, Gina DeMaio found Michele O'Brien behind the Fury defense but the Ireland international bounced her shot just wide of the far post.
Ottawa was playing against its second New Jersey opponent in as many days after topping the New Jersey Wildcats 2-0 on Sunday. Christina Julien came close for the visitors forcing Poulos into a falling save from 12 yards out in the 78th minute.
The Fury open the regular season on June 7th when it hosts the Western Mass Lady Pioneers at University of Ottawa.
